Tudor Folk Club
Chesham, Bucks, England
Who we are
We're a thriving, friendly, eclectic folk club. We tend to alternate guest nights with singers' nights. Some recent guests include Coope, Boyes & Simpson, Lindisfarne (the last ever concert), Pentangle, Show of Hands, Nancy Kerr & James Fagan, Acoustic Strawbs... We like all sorts of music, so long as it's acoustic based, and generally tending towards being 'in the tradition'. We're very encouraging towards new singers, and everyone gets a generous and supportive welcome.
We meet on Monday nights, starting at 20.30hrs. We're usually pretty prompt. It's a non-smoking venue: in fact the whole building is smoke-free (although there is a car park!)
If you're brave enough, there are some portraits in the latest Rogues' Gallery (plus the previous one of April 2002).
This is where we are
We meet at the White Hill Community Centre, Chesham, Bucks., Click here for a really good map. The Centre provides facilities for a variety of clubs and societies throughout the week. It has a bar on the ground floor that is licensed at club prices, and you can take your drinks in to the room where we meet. Most nights we meet upstairs on the top floor, but there is a lift which makes us fully wheelchair accessible. We hold some gigs in the main hall on the ground floor, which has easy ramp access.
Floorspots and visitors
The singers' nights are generally run as a round-the room session, where everyone who comes along prepared to sing (or play, or recite) gets their fair crack. Usually there will be between a dozen and twenty such contributors: and they'll usually get a minimum of two songs each. The MC for the night will be one of five or six regulars (one of the strengths of the club is that the responsibilities for its running is shared) so the exact format varies: some MCs prefer to give two song spots, others limit it to one at a time. We have a healthy ratio of performers to listeners at Singers Nights.
...whereas Guest Nights follow a different format. Generally, the timetable is something like:
8.30 - MC starts proceedings and does a two-song floor spot. Two more two-song floor spots, then:
9.00 - guest's first set, followed by:
9.40 - 'beer break'
9.55 - two (or three, if time permits) more two-song floor spots, finally:
10.20 - guest's second set
11.00 - close.
The spots are generally on a first-come, first-served basis, but if you're travelling from far afield, you could try getting in touch first and seeing if a pre-booked spot can be arranged. Try Mike on our Contacts/Links page.
